The Good
Ticked all the boxes, is stable and works well once setup. It is a one-off price, not a yearly fee.
The Bad
Not too much really. Could possibly improve the manual with images to illustrate operation, explain the pros and cons of encryption and add key based encryption (e.g. OpenPGP).
Conclusion
I came across CloudBerry Lab about three years ago and revisit it in October this year after having problems with Duplicati. It is tough to find a reasonably priced product that includes: various storage, compression, encryption (inc ssl), versioning (auto deletion), FTP and full scheduling email notification. CloudBerry offers massive potential, covers all the above points and more. Most importantly it offers true privacy due to SSL transfer protection and client side encryption rather than server side, which a lot of cheap backup services do. Perfect for basic to advanced backup with other products covering Exchange, SQL and more.
Vendor Statement
CloudBerry Lab was established in 2008 by a group of experienced IT professionals with the mission to help organizations to adopt Cloud computing technologies by closing the gap between Cloud vendors propositions and consumer needs through development of innovative low costs solutions. Our flagship product CloudBerry Explorer for Amazon S3 makes managing files in cloud EASY. By providing an industry leading user interface to Amazon S3 accounts, files, and buckets, CloudBerry lets you manage your files on cloud just as you would on your own local computer. Built on a proven, Microsoft .NET platform, the CloudBerry Explorer has thousands of users at leading Fortune 500 companies, including Microsoft, Oracle, Amazon, SAP, Sun, Accenture, Cap Gemini.
What Does This Solve?
Simple, data loss is caused by corruption, hardware failure, human error and infections. If there is only one thing you do – backup your data daily or weekly. This removes the reliance on experience or backup services with poor privacy.
What Can CloudBerry Backup Do?
Upload your business or personal data with optional compression and encryption to a wide variety of local and external services. FTP, Network Folders, NAS Drives, S3, Rackspace, Azure and more.
S3 Backup Mode
The following shows how you create a backup set up AWS S3, which is one of many options available for end storage. For testing I have created a new bucket with Access Key and Secret Key, which will be deleted afterwards.
When you click Backup Files on either server or desktop edition you get a list of storage options. Select Amazon S3 and under drop down select Create a new account. Select bucket. SSL encryption is automatically ticked.
Give your backup set a name and choose if you want to store setting in the cloud or not.
For this demo I am using Advanced Mode for extra encryption and versioning options.
Select the folder you wish to backup.
Options include: file type, size and age. If you wanted only to backup .zip then it can be added.
Pick encryption and compression. AES, RC2, DES, 3DES – some of which are very weak and dated. AES should be used 128–256 bit. You can scramble file names if you wish.
Purge and versioning includes by age, number and if deleted locally.
Schedules include: hourly, daily, weekly or monthly.
Ability to create custom commands such as clear a folder.
The product can email if successful or not. You need to specify a SMTP server for this.
