The Good
Alt-N SecurityGateway is competitively priced and simple to set up*. It will ensure efficient and hassle free message spooling once up and running.

The Bad
* Though the set-up is simple, full configuration has a lot of options, which is good for granularity, but not for a novice. Currently extension filtering does not check within archives, though antivirus does.

Testing
Real-time: during a seven-day trial period SecurityGateway detected and stopped everything it claimed it would; spam, malware, relaying and SPF errors.

Rewind ten years and malware (commonly known as a computer virus) were created and spread mainly for fun and possibly for a political purpose. Today organised crime gangs have moved from the street where they deal in illegal drugs or run phoney investment schemes to the cyber world.

Currently malware are created often with the purpose of making money and sometimes to inflict physical damage (think Stuxnet). As we see a greater increase of computers in our home it is not surprising they have become a great way for cyber criminals to making money by exploiting them.

Drive by downloads is the latest fashion in malware infections

If we go back about ten years viruses were solely spread by emails. The people that spread these viruses then started to get savvier and found new ways to spread them. The next method of spreading malware was USB sticks, often causing problems for the likes of students who would use a USB stick, realise it was contaminated and then use all their course work.

These days’ we are more aware of viruses and know to be careful of opening emails from unknown sources. A change in attitude means the criminal gangs need to think outside of the box since we’ve become more clued up to know how they operate. The latest fashion in creating viruses is therefore drive by downloads.
