IT Security: companies do not do themselves any favours

We have all heard the marketing saying ‘less is more’ and when it comes to IT security the same applies. Fewer devices and services is far easier to manage and secure. Early in the new millennium the mainstream computer was born with the release of Windows XP which became the de facto standard and today it is still widely used.

Ten years ago laptops were clumpy, slow, heavy and expensive and USB sticks had low storage capacity and were also pricey. Most people only had a desktop computer which was easier to control since they only had to secure it against electronic threats ... a desktop is more difficult to steal than a slim, lightweight laptop.

Whether they be a terrorist, a foreign state or lone malicious hacker, when someone is bent on launching an attack, they need intelligence. Planning a cyber attack is no less reliant on good intelligence: how many personnel are operating at a particular location and what training they might have.

Recently my two Verbatim Store 'n' Go Micro 2GB USB Drives have been playing up so I bought a replacement, a single Verbatim Store 'n' Go Micro 8GB USB Drive. My motto is do as you preach, think about a dentist with cracked teeth, what would you think?

So of course I needed to destroy the devices well. Despite the drives over the past years being formatted, blasted with random data, files being overwritten, encrypted and decrypted something stronger and more amusing was needed.
