A lot of people use the rationale that 'it won't happen to me' as a way of not confronting reality: they will never be a victim of crime, need to buy travel insurance or protect their data on laptops or external media.
We have heard this excuse so often that you wouldn't think it could (nearly) happen to us. Remember we are a data security company so our security set-up and policies are very strict, probably more so than most banks and public sector departments.
Last month the Director of Data Defender was travelling back from Marrakech Airport to London Gatwick. When he arrived at Gatwick he noticed a luggage strap was missing from the holdall and that it was a little lighter than normal. On opening the bag he noticed that a coat and some coins were missing, a total value of around £120. Not a great loss ... but what would have happened if it had been a laptop or USB drive that had been stolen?
All data stored on our company USB devices has at least two layers of separate encryption, so the likelihood of anyone getting access to a file is extremely low. This is us and our way of working ... but most companies have no security at all.
If it can happen to us, it can happen to anyone. Don't leave it to chance and hope that 'it won't happen to me'. A tiny £5 USB stick can cost your business £1000s in fines, negative PR and more if lost or stolen.
